The Helicoid

The Helicoid was discovered as a minimal surface by Meusnier. It is a classical result that the helicoid is the only ruled minimal surface. A recent result of Meeks and Rosenberg states that any properly embedded, complete minimal disk is either the plane or the helicoid.
